Everything has Beauty
May-June 2025
Exhibition view from Banja Rathnov Gallery, Copenhagen

JLS's visual world is complex. In her work, she is deeply involved in the landscape as an exponent of climatic changes and the environmental impacts of the time. But it is in the immediate areas where she has her way that she finds these traces: For example, at Holbæk Ladegård and on Amager Commons.

The series 'Hysterical Snow' is both disturbing and aesthetically beautiful. The longing for the 3 months of snow that we experienced in the 80s and in JLS' childhood lies lurking. A real winter weather, from December to March, that lights up the darkness.

In the series ‘Off Road/Vildveje' the landscape on Amager Fælled has been given a new expression, not as threatened nature, but as an area that gives us the opportunity to get lost a little. To get lost - in an otherwise overstructured everyday life.

In 'Still life with Fluff' JLS works in the studio with the things she has found on her way. These are humble objects, relegated to decay, that are staged and given new life in these still lifes. In this way, the photographs point to our dealings with materials. What carries stories and what is known as worthless. In a world where we consume more than we have, it is a reminder that everything has value, everything can be recycled – everything is beautiful in the right light.
